License applicants over 17 years old must also pass the knowledge permit test and vision exam, though completion of a behind-the-wheel course is not necessary. You will then need to pass the 50-question road rule and road sign MVC written test, and a vision test, before embarking on your six-hours of practical training. While completing a driver’s ed course is not a legal requirement for permit applicants of any age in the state of New Jersey, teenagers under 17 years old must provide proof of enrollment in a six-hour behind-the-wheel training course when applying for their initial learner’s permit.
